12 of the best wooden armchairs for the neutral home

I’m always asked where the mid-century style armchair in my living room is from – the answer is eBay; one of those lucky bargains you come across every now and then. I think it was about £150 at the time. With its high back and naturally reclined position, it’s the comfiest chair. We could probably reupholster it in a nicer fabric and revarnish the frame, but it does a good job for now and it’s one of my favourite spots in the house. It’s the perfect place to curl up with a book by the fire and you can’t help but run your hands over the smooth arms.

I think when you have a large sofa with lots of upholstery it can be nice to balance the heavy form with something more lightweight, like a wooden armchair. Wood instantly adds warmth to a neutral scheme, bringing texture and tactility to plain walls and subtle, pared-back tones. Being able to see under and around the chair also makes a space feel lighter and airier.

12 of the best wooden armchairs for the neutral home

Today I’ve rounded up 12 of the best wooden armchairs for the neutral home, from traditional spindle back designs to contemporary shell chairs. Wooden chairs can often be extortionate so I’ve tried to keep all of these below £2,000, which in itself is a lot for a chair. Quite a few of these are currently on sale, which is always a happy surprise!

My favourite of all the wooden armchairs is the Fly lounge chair by Space Copenhagen for &Tradition; I love the white oak frame and the comfy cushions look very inviting. It almost looks like a contemporary take on a Shaker style chair. If you’re looking for a bargain, look no further than H&M Home’s minimalist wooden armchair for £199, and if you want to splash a bit more, I would have my eye on Six the Residence’s elegant walnut design.
